(Spoiler: we're not off somewhere sipping martinis.)

If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes while you and your guests enjoy dinner, you’re not alone. Most couples assume their photographer is out there snapping more photos of people mid-bite (no thanks) or simply sitting there staring at the wall until the next big event. The truth? Dinner is the one precious pocket of time during a wedding day when your photographer finally gets to take a break — and trust me, it’s well-earned.

Why Dinner = Break Time

By the time the reception rolls around, your photo team has been going non-stop for five or more hours: getting ready coverage, first looks, ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour… you name it. Once dinner begins, there’s usually not much happening that’s particularly photogenic (people chewing never is). So, dinner becomes our short window to breathe, refuel, and reset for the rest of the night.

It’s the only time we can take our cameras off our shoulders, sit down, and eat something that isn’t a granola bar from our camera bag. A solid meal during dinner helps us recharge so we can finish the night strong, and continue giving you our best energy for all those fun, dance floor candids later.

So if you’re in the planning stages, do your photographer a favor and construct your timeline so there’s space to breathe between dinner and the next big moment. (Bonus points if your caterer serves us early. We’ll love you forever!)

Who Provides Our Meals?

Short answer: You do!

I have it written into my wedding photography contract that the couple is required to provide me with a meal. After standing for 5 hours, I absolutely have to have something in my stomach, and I would prefer that it's not my third uncrustable of the day.

Where We Eat

Every venue handles vendor meals differently. Some provide a designated vendor room; others offer seats at cocktail-hour tables or even a vendor table tucked in the corner of the reception space. No matter where we end up, the goal is simple: eat quickly, stay out of the way, and get back in action before the next event.

Ideally, photographers (and other vendors) are served right after the wedding party. This timing is key because it allows us to finish eating before guests do, meaning we’re ready to capture speeches, cake cutting, and dancing without delay. When venues serve vendors last, we often end up scarfing down our meal in record time so we don’t miss anything.

What We Photograph During Dinner

Dinner isn’t a total photo-free zone. At the very start, we’ll usually grab a few candids — guests mingling, servers pouring wine, maybe a few detail shots of the food being served. If dinner is family-style, we might photograph people passing dishes around the table; if the venue has wine service, we’ll capture that little touch of hospitality.

And if speeches are planned for this part of the night, we’ll of course photograph those, too. But fair warning: dinner isn’t the best time for speeches. Between the clinking of silverware and chewing noises, it’s hard for guests to focus on what’s being said, and it cuts into that much-needed vendor break. The best speeches happen either right before or after dinner when everyone’s attention is on the couple instead of their plates.

A Little Timeline Tip

If you want your evening to flow seamlessly, try pre-plating salads so guests can start eating as soon as they find their seats. Then schedule speeches after salads but before dinner service begins. That way, your vendors can eat at the same time as your guests and be ready to jump right back in once plates are cleared. Everyone wins.

So.. What Do Wedding Photographers Do During Dinner?

Dinner might not be the most glamorous part of a wedding day, but it’s one of the most necessary—for both you and your vendors. It’s your chance to relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the energy of everyone you love being in one room.

For your photographer, it’s the moment to pause, rest their feet, and gear up for the rest of the night. Because once the plates are cleared and the lights dim, we’re back at it, capturing all of the chaotic moments, the romantic ones, and the ones you'll never want to forget.

So while you’re enjoying your meal, know that we’re doing the same, and quietly getting ready to make the next part of your wedding day look just as unforgettable as the first.
