MAY I have your hand in marriage | Project

Updated: Jul 11, 2019

I've been trying to find people who are planning to propose to their significant other. I want to be able to offer my photography services from the very start. If I get to photograph their proposal, then hopefully I'll end up getting booked to photograph their wedding as well.

I've put ads on Facebook with an engagement and wedding photo to draw attention.

I got no bites.

Why? Well, first of all, my ad didn't include photos of someone proposing. Why would someone hire me to photograph their proposal when I didn't even have a photo of someone proposing? Clearly I had no experience.

So, I got experience.

I posted in a local Facebook group asking for help. Couples were more than willing to fake propose to one another in trade for few couples photos they wanted. I'm surprised at how many couples who weren't married volunteered. I was hoping some of the guys would use the photo shoot as an excuse to pop the question for real. Unfortunately no one did, and not even all the guys knew why they were there.

When I started talking to the first couple about the sequence of photos that I'd take and where I'd be, the guy was like "WAIT, WHAT?! I'm proposing?!”. I thought it was going to be so awkward but he got over it relatively quick and dropped to one knee without a problem.

I told all of couples who weren't married not to say anything during the proposal. Just smile/be excited so that it's not too weird for them. I told the couples who were married to confess their love for one another and ask each other to marry them again. I think everyone can likes an excuse to hear their partner talk about how they feel about them.

Now I have photo examples of five different couple's *fake* proposals for marketing purposes but I also have the experience. Not only did I gain experience photographing the main event, but experience planning the proposal. Where/when/how. I'm so excited to have the opportunity to photograph real proposals in the future; maybe even some of my volunteers'!

This should go without saying, but if you know anyone who is planning to propose, send them my way!!

Here are some more of my favorite photo from the sessions after the initial proposal:
